Cast Iron Pipe Lining in Tucson
Cast iron sewer lines in Tucson's pre-1970s neighborhoods are corroding from the inside out. CIPP lining creates a new, smooth, corrosion-proof pipe inside the old cast iron — no excavation, no yard damage.

Is this the right method for your line?
We tell you when this method works — and when it does not. Not every line can be lined, and not every line should be. Here is the honest criteria.
When it works
- Cast iron lines with internal scale, corrosion, or rust buildup
- Cracks or pinhole leaks in the cast iron pipe
- Root intrusion at cast iron joints or connections
- The cast iron is structurally sound enough to serve as a host pipe for the liner
When it doesn't
- The cast iron has fully corroded through and collapsed
- The pipe has lost significant wall thickness and is deforming
- A severe belly in the cast iron that needs re-grading
- The line needs to be upsized
The technical process, explained
Descaling removes decades of corrosion
Before lining, we descale the cast iron to remove the buildup of rust, mineral scale, and corrosion products that have accumulated over decades. This is a critical step — the liner needs a relatively clean surface to bond to. We use mechanical descaling chains and hydro-jetting together.
CIPP liner creates a corrosion-proof interior
Once the cast iron is cleaned, a CIPP liner is inverted into the pipe and cured. The liner is epoxy resin — it does not corrode, does not scale, and does not provide a surface for roots to grab onto. The old cast iron stays in place as the host pipe, but the liner is the new structural pipe that carries the flow.
Flow improves dramatically
Corroded cast iron has a rough, pitted interior that catches solids and slows flow. A CIPP liner is perfectly smooth — flow capacity often improves even though the diameter is slightly reduced. Customers frequently notice their drains are faster after lining.
Process steps
Here is what happens at your property — and what you will see at each step.
- 1
Camera inspection
We assess the cast iron condition — scale, corrosion, cracks, root intrusion.
On your property: We locate the failure and show you the condition of the cast iron. - 2
Descaling and cleaning
We mechanically descale and hydro-jet to remove decades of corrosion.
On your property: The sound of the descaling chain and jetter. - 3
Post-cleaning camera run
We camera the line again after cleaning to verify it is ready for the liner.
On your property: You see the difference before and after cleaning. - 4
Liner installation and cure
The CIPP liner is inverted and cured — 3–6 hours.
On your property: Boiler and compressor running. - 5
Final inspection
We camera the new liner and locate the repair area and confirm the work is complete.
On your property: Smooth, white liner interior on the monitor.
What's different about cast iron pipe lining here
Sam Hughes, Blenman-Elm, El Encanto
These midtown neighborhoods, developed from the 1920s through the 1950s, are almost entirely served by original cast iron laterals. At 70–100 years old, these pipes have significant internal corrosion and scale. CIPP lining is the ideal solution — it restores the line without excavating mature landscaping, brick pathways, and historic features that define these neighborhoods.
Armory Park and Menlo Park
In Tucson's oldest neighborhoods, historic district restrictions make excavation difficult and sometimes impossible. Cast iron lining through a cleanout or a single small pit avoids most restrictions. The camera inspection and documentation also serve as historic property records.
Corrosion and Tucson water
Tucson's water chemistry, with its mineral content, contributes to scale buildup inside cast iron pipes. The combination of hard water and decades of use creates a rough, restricted interior that catches debris and roots. Lining eliminates this surface — the epoxy interior does not scale or corrode, regardless of water chemistry.

Learn moreQuestions about cast iron pipe lining
Yes — cast iron is one of the best candidates for CIPP lining. The corrosion and scale are removed, and the liner creates a new, smooth, corrosion-proof interior. The cast iron remains as the host pipe. No excavation needed.
We use a mechanical descaling chain — a chain that spins inside the pipe and knocks the scale and corrosion loose — followed by hydro-jetting to flush it out. This is done before the liner is installed and is a critical step for proper bonding.
A CIPP liner is built to last for decades. Unlike cast iron, the epoxy liner does not corrode or scale, so it does not degrade the same way. The liner is a new structural pipe — the cast iron is just the host.
Age alone does not disqualify a pipe from lining — the condition does. If the cast iron is still structurally intact (not collapsed or deformed), it can be lined regardless of age. The camera inspection tells us the condition.
If the cast iron is corroded but structurally intact, lining is almost always the better choice — less expensive, less disruptive, and faster. If the pipe has collapsed or is deforming, replacement may be necessary. We show you the inspection and give you an honest recommendation.
